Full Biography

Dr. Stine Eckert is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication at Wayne State University in Detroit. She is a German native and her research focuses on social media, journalism, gender and minorities in the US, Germany, UK and Switzerland. Her research on Wikipedia’s gender gap, women bloggers, Muslim bloggers, feminism and social media, and online abuse has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as New Media & Society; International Journal of Communication; Media, Culture & Society; Journal of Communication Inquiry; Journalism: Theory, Practice & Criticism; and Media Report to Women as well as several book chapters.

She is co-founder of the Wikid GRRLs project to teach teenage girls computer and online skills in after-school programs to contribute to closing the gender gap on Wikipedia and STEM. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Maryland and her M.S. from Ohio University after studying Journalism Studies, Communication and Media Studies, and American Studies at the University of Leipzig, Germany. She also earned a Graduate Certificate in Women’s Studies from the University of Maryland.

She has been a member of grant teams for the World Health Organization (WHO) and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and has received several awards for her research including the Donna Allen Award for Feminist Advocacy from the Commission on the Status of Women (AEJMC).

She previously worked as interview producer for Al-Jazeera and reporter and producer for WOUB, Radio Goethe and Radio Mephisto.

She has been interviewed for ThinkProgress and The Detroit Free Press, and German public broadcasters DRadio Wissen, WDR and Radio Fritz and the German Federal Agency for Civic Education (Bundeszentral für Politische Bildung); the German news magazine The European and several blogs.
