In her decades working as a family physician, Suzanne T. Poppema, MD has treated many women’s reproductive issues, from prescribing birth control, to delivering babies, to providing abortions for her patients. Her firsthand experience and clinical knowledge make Dr. Poppema an ideal resource for questions about reproductive healthcare. As former board chair of Physicians for Reproductive Choice and Health, Dr. Poppema represents hundreds of pro-choice physicians across the United States who believe that all women and men should have access to comprehensive reproductive healthcare.
As a family physician, Dr. Poppema has defended her patients’ right to reproductive healthcare through legislative testimony, involvement in numerous medical organizations, and interviews with a wide variety of media outlets. Dr. Poppema’s clinical experience includes 15 years as the medical director of an abortion clinic in the Pacific Northwest, as well as a decade working in family practice. In 1996, Dr. Poppema chronicled her experiences as an abortion provider in her book, Why I Am an Abortion Doctor (Prometheus Books). Dr. Poppema serves as Director of International Medical Consulting and is a retired Associate Clinical Professor in Family Medicine at the University of Washington. Throughout her career, Dr. Poppema has worked to ensure that all doctors have the opportunity to learn about reproductive healthcare, both as a teacher and as an advocate within the medical education system.
Dr. Poppema’s expertise in medication abortion has made her a popular lecturer on this technique. She has traveled throughout the United States and to Europe, South Africa, and Australia to train healthcare professionals in abortion techniques, and to offer advice on clinical protocols for medication abortion. In the 1990s, Dr. Poppema’s clinic conducted some of the first trials of mifepristone medication abortion in the United States.
Dr. Poppema served as president of the National Abortion Federation from 1998-2000. She is a graduate of the University of New Hampshire and Harvard Medical School, and completed her residency at the University of Washington School of Medicine. Dr. Poppema speaks fluent French.
