Full Biography

Since 2004, Erin Helfert has worked in the area of gender as an advocate and a specialist on various donor-funded projects including those with USAID, the UN, and the EU throughout Africa, Latin America, and Europe. She speaks globally on issues of Gender and Justice, and Women-led Economic Growth. Erin’s advocacy played an integral role in the formation of the US Dept. of Justice “Vision 21” Program, which identifies previously undefined victim populations, and aims for a more inclusive victim response whether in the United States or abroad.

From 2008-09, Erin lived and worked in Casablanca, Morocco to conduct research on gender and justice reform within the Kingdom. At the end of 2008, Erin fell victim to the very violence that she researched. After the assault, she engaged in an international legal and personal struggle that has connected her to the broader struggle against sexual violence in Morocco, the US, and the broader, global stage.

Erin’s personal experience in Morocco, along with her dual mission to empower women through the elimination of violence and economic opportunity were highlighted in the Department of Justice Publication, OVC News and Program Updates: Global Victimization, Al Jazeera America, and Cosmopolitan magazine. Erin is working on a forthcoming book.

Erin holds a Masters (US) in International Relations and Development, and a Master II (French) in International Trade and Development. She currently resides in New York City.
