Linda Fairstein began her career as a prosecutor in 1972, and four years later was appointed by New York County District Attorney Robert Morgenthau to head the Sex Crimes Prosecution Unit, where she supervised every case of sexual assault and domestic violence, and homicides related to those crimes, in Manhattan. Fairstein served as bureau chief for 25 years, prosecuting scores of high profile cases - from Marvin Teicher, the dentist who molested patients after sedating them; to Russell West - the 'midtown rapist' - who attacked more than a dozen women in the city's landmark office buildings; to the strangulation death of Jennifer Levin in Central Park by Robert Chambers, known as the 'preppy murder' case.
In addition to her decades of public service, Fairstein is a successful author. In 1993, her book, “Sexual Violence: Our War Against Rape,” which chronicled the history of legislative reform in the field of sexual assault as well as detailing the innovative work of Fairstein's unit, was named a New York Times “Notable Book of the Year.” Fairstein is also a bestselling crime novelist. Her first mystery novel, “Final Jeopardy” was made into a television movie and her six subsequent novels in the Alexandra Cooper crime series have all become international bestsellers.
Fairstein is a graduate of Vassar College and the University of Virginia School of Law. She is a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and a member of the International Society of Barristers. In 1993, Glamour and New Woman magazines named her “Woman of the Year.”
Fairstein appears regularly as a legal commentator on a variety of national news programs including the “Today Show,” “Good Morning America,” CNN’s “American Morning” and A&E’s “American Justice.”
