Full Biography

Stacy Bannerman, M.S., M.F.A., is the author of HOMEFRONT 911: How Families of Veterans Are Wounded by Our Wars (Skyhorse Publishing, 2015), and WHEN THE WAR CAME HOME (2006). Stacy has testified before several Congressional committees, and singlehandedly spearheaded state and national legislative campaigns for military family leave, resulting in the passage of Oregon’s H.B. 2744, and the introduction of the federal Military Family Leave Act of 2009.  Ms. Bannerman authored OR H.B. 3391, and independently secured its unanimous passage, establishing the Military Family Task Force in Oregon, believed to be the first in the nation. At the request of the OR Department of Justice, she wrote the language identifying partners of combat veterans as an at-risk, underserved population under the STOP/VAWA 2014-2016 grant program implementation plan, the first time that demographic has been prioritized by a State DOJ. She is an executive coach and consultant for Nonprofit Start or Fix, and conducts workshops on Writing for Change.

Ms. Bannerman has served as the Executive Director of the Martin Luther King Jr. Outreach Center, Sanctuary One, and The Sanctuary for Veterans & Families.  She worked for an alternative-to-sentencing agency in Minneapolis, MN, and was a support group facilitator for victims of domestic abuse in Mankato, MN.

Stacy has conducted nearly 600 multimedia interviews, including Hardball with Chris Matthews, BBC, Deborah Norville on MSNBC, NBC Nightly News, Army Times, NPR, and the Washington Post.  She has written dozens of articles for The Progressive, Salon, Seattle Post-Intelligencer, The San Francisco Chronicle, The Women’s Media Center and many others.

Stacy received her M.S., Magna Cum Laude, from Minnesota State University, an MFA in Writing from Pacific University, a B.A. in International Relations, and studied in the Doctoral program at Wisdom University.
