On Friday May 2, the UN Human Rights Council's new independent expert on the right to food said a special session of the human rights body would bring into the debate over rising food prices and global shortages "the human right to adequate food which for the moment has been totally absent." In a recent piece for the Center for Strategic and International Studies, expert Johanna Mendelson Forman analyzes the effect of the food crisis in Haiti's human rights. Forman, the senior advisor to the UN in Haiti last year, argues that “unless the global community rises to the occasion and finds a way to meet immediate human needs, all the stability operations of the United Nations will not overcome the basic human instinct of fighting for food to survive.” Read the full article here.
